The health system
Portugal is recognized as the 12th best health system in the world by the World Health Organization (WHO). It works much like the French system. Health in Portugal is between the private and the public.
The public health system
The public offers a very good quality of care and support. The infrastructures are efficient, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and animated by recognized doctors.
As a resident, you will be attached to a health center near you and have a doctor. The costs will be borne by the Portuguese Social Security and you will pay a user fee (€ 2.10 for a routine consultation for example).
The quality of the public system, however, is tarnished by waiting times which, depending on the specialties and pathologies, can be long.
In order to be taken care of immediately, you can also call a private doctor directly at your expense or go to a private facility such as a clinic.
You can choose to pay for each medical intervention or to obtain additional health benefits. As in France, the choice is vast and many companies (insurance company or health specialists) offer covers from the most basic to the most complete.
Can pensioners continue to seek treatment in France ?
In the context of European agreements, persons receiving a pension in France can be treated in France or in their country of origin in Europe. The attachment to their social security of origin will allow them, for example, to continue a medical follow-up with his specialist specialist or to carry out an already programmed operation.
